The History of Swedish and Indian Head Massages
The word Massage apparently derives from either the Greek word "Massein" - to knead of the Arabic "Mas'h" - to press softly.
The idea of the "healing power of touch" is a very ancient concept, which embodies the theory, that part of the healing is the caring of one person for another.
Swedish Body Massage
Swedish Massage is traditionally described as the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. Swedish Massage as we know it today, was developed in the early nineteenth century by Henreich Ling (1776-1839) - a Swede. Ling developed a scientific system of massage and movements based on physiology.
Swedish Massage has its roots in Eastern Medicine. It has been particularly recognised for its ability to provide deep tissue and muscle relaxation and assist with joint mobility. It reduces stress and anxiety with a variety if techniques that calm the nervous system, enhance circulation and soothe muscle aches and strains.
Practitioners use a combination of gentle flowing massage along with friction kneading, percussion and stimulation of pressure points, as well as stretching and joint manipulation.
Swedish Massage is considered to be an invigorating massage. It will take place on a couch using various products, oils, cream or talc power to lubricate the skin. It stimulates the circulation and aids the removal of toxins, which build up in the body. A full session lasts approximately one hour and involves the legs, back, arms, shoulders and neck. Shorter sessions can be arranged concentrating on particular problem areas.

In Indian traditions, the belief is that massage preserves the body’s life force and energy, and is the most powerful way of relaxing and rejuvenating the body, babies are massaged from birth to encourage bonding and keeps the babies happy and healthy. By the age of six the children are taught to show love and respect by sharing a massage with family.
